Greater Cairo
Cairo Citadel
قلعة صلاح الدين
Salah al-Din's fortress, seat of Egypt's rulers for seven centuries, crowned by the Mosque of Muhammad Ali.
Salah al-Din began the Citadel on a spur of the Muqattam hills in the 1170s, and it remained the seat of Egypt's rulers for about seven centuries. Its skyline is dominated by the Ottoman-style Mosque of Muhammad Ali, completed in the nineteenth century, while the older Mosque of al-Nasir Muhammad and several museums stand inside the walls. Terraces look out across the domes and minarets of Historic Cairo.
